Children's Book for Creativity

Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson

This book shows how a child's imagination can inspire creativity. Let a young child express him/herself with a crayon or any other art tool. I loved drawing as a child, and now as an adult I will find that I draw while I think. You can call it scribble, but I think of it as my mind working on a thought. A child's artwork can show so much more if we just take the time to appreciate it.

  1. Thanks for sharing! I was interested in seeing what the book was about and I found this animated version on youtube based on the book

It reminded me of a cartoon my kids (and ok I admit it, me too!) used to watch, Chalk Zone. Here's a link to a clip of one of the shows:

Depending on the age of the kids you work with both the book and the show could be used as a starter for all kinds off fun chalk and drawing projects.

  3. Kim I love this book!!! This book was the first book my son used to do a reading fair board on in Kindergaten. (Now that was a long time!! He's going to the eleventh grade now). I have read this book numberous of times to my daughter when she was my sons age. It reminds me while at work when our students have to do their crayon and paint drawings and once they completes it they tell us what the picture is. This book really shows how a child's imagination can inspire creativity. Now that's a favorite book!!!
